Recruiting

Guide for Parents

Prep Baseball isn’t just for players—it’s designed to ease the stress and uncertainty of the recruiting process. High school baseball rankings often favor players who mature physically earlier than their peers. While this can sometimes reflect true talent, it isn’t always accurate. Additionally, many recruiting services give higher rankings to players who attend more showcases.

We understand that the cost of showcases can be excessive, and it’s unfair to judge a player's ability based on their attendance at these events. That’s why our affordable platform eliminates the bias often seen in baseball recruiting. PrepBaseballRankings.com is the only recruiting platform that uses an unbiased approach to ranking players.

Our ranking system also helps parents assess where their son best fits at the next level. Player evaluations can be inconsistent—some coaches may overvalue or undervalue an athlete. This platform provides a reliable benchmark to see how your son compares with others in his class.

Understanding the Recruiting Landscape

The recruiting process has changed. Many colleges now prioritize recruiting players from other schools—including those outside the junior college (JUCO) system—rather than focusing solely on high school athletes. Just take a look at your favorite team’s roster, and you’ll notice many players transferred from other colleges. Some of the top baseball programs wait for players to prove themselves at another school before recruiting them. That’s why it’s essential to have a clear plan—knowing where you want to go and what you hope to gain from both baseball and academics.

Breaking Down College Baseball Levels Division I (DI)

If you’re among the top players, DI may be a good option. However, as a freshman, playing time is often limited. You’ll be competing against seasoned upperclassmen, transfers from other DI programs, and standout JUCO players.

Division II (DII) & Division III (DIII)

The talent gap between DII and DIII players is often small. Many DI-caliber athletes choose DII or DIII schools to secure more playing time early in their careers. At these levels, you’ll find pitchers throwing anywhere from the low 80s to the mid-90s. Some players even transfer to DI schools after proving themselves at the DII or DIII level.

NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)

NAIA competition is comparable to DII and DIII baseball, with little difference in the level of play.

Junior College (JUCO)

JUCO can be an excellent option for athletes who need extra time to develop their skills, gain exposure, or position themselves for the MLB draft. Many college coaches actively recruit from JUCO programs, making it a strong stepping stone for those prioritizing baseball.

College Club Baseball

Many players overlook club baseball, but it’s a great opportunity to continue playing competitively. With over 270 teams at the Division I, II, and III club levels, players can enjoy the experience of collegiate baseball while attending a larger school. Some club players have even been drafted into professional baseball.

Academics Matter

Many colleges use athletics—including baseball—as a tool to attract students and generate tuition revenue. While some programs offer legitimate opportunities, others use sports as an enrollment incentive. That’s why education must come first. Before committing, research the school’s academic reputation and make sure it aligns with your goals. If you need guidance, our staff is here to help assess where your student-athlete fits best.
